Marrakech Airport to the Medina: Taxi, Bus or Private Transfer?

Marrakech Menara Airport (RAK) is only about 6 km from the Medina, so the transfer is short: around 15 to 25 minutes by car, depending on traffic. The harder part is choosing how to travel, agreeing a fair price and finding your riad once you reach the old city.

Here are all your options, from the cheapest bus to a private driver waiting with your name on a sign.

Quick comparison

OptionBest forGood to know
Airport busBudget travellers with light luggageRuns to Jemaa el-Fnaa and Gueliz; cheapest option
Taxi from the rankFlexibility, no bookingAgree the price before you get in; fares are higher at night
Pre-booked private transferFamilies, late arrivals, first-timersFixed price, driver meets you in arrivals
Riad pickupStaying deep in the MedinaOften includes someone to walk you to the door

Option 1: Airport bus

An airport bus runs between Menara Airport and the city centre, stopping at Jemaa el-Fnaa square and in Gueliz. It is the cheapest way into town and comfortable enough, but it runs on a timetable and does not go into the Medina lanes, so you may still have a walk with your bags.

Best if you are travelling light, arrive during the day and are staying near Jemaa el-Fnaa or in Gueliz.

Option 2: Taxi from the rank

Taxis wait outside arrivals. Prices are often negotiated rather than metered, and first-time visitors are commonly quoted more than the going rate. To avoid overpaying:

  • Look for the official fare board near the taxi rank and use it as your reference.
  • Agree the price before you get in, and confirm whether it is per car or per person.
  • Have small notes in dirhams. Drivers rarely have change for large notes.
  • Expect higher fares at night and after late flights.

Option 3: Pre-booked private transfer

A pre-booked transfer is the most stress-free option, especially if you land late, travel with children or are visiting Morocco for the first time. You pay a fixed price online, the driver tracks your flight and waits in arrivals with your name, and there is no haggling.

Compare prices on Kiwitaxi, Welcome Pickups and GetTransfer. These services also cover longer routes, such as Marrakech airport to Essaouira, Agadir or the Agafay desert camps.

Option 4: Riad pickup

Many riads offer airport pickup. Because cars cannot enter most Medina lanes, the driver stops at the nearest gate or square and someone from the riad walks you the rest of the way with your luggage. Ask your riad for the price and compare it with a private transfer.

Tips for arriving in Marrakech

  • Get mobile data before you land. A travel eSIM means you can message your driver or riad straight away. See our guide to the best eSIM for Morocco.
  • Withdraw some dirhams at the airport. The Moroccan dirham is a closed currency, so you usually cannot buy it before you travel.
  • Save your riad’s location offline and send the pin to your driver.
  • Say no politely to unofficial helpers who offer to carry your bags in the Medina, unless you are happy to tip.

FAQ

How far is Marrakech airport from the Medina?

About 6 km. The drive usually takes 15 to 25 minutes.

Can a taxi take me to my riad’s door?

Usually not. Most Medina lanes are too narrow for cars, so drivers stop at the closest gate. Ask your riad to meet you there.

Is it better to pre-book a transfer?

For late arrivals, families and first-time visitors, yes: you get a fixed price and a driver waiting for you. Solo travellers arriving in daytime can save money with the airport bus or a taxi.

Best eSIM for Morocco (2026): Airalo vs Yesim vs Saily Compared

Getting online the minute you land in Morocco makes everything easier: finding your riad in the Medina maze, translating a menu, checking train times or messaging your host. A travel eSIM is the simplest way to do it, with no queue at a phone shop and no need to swap your SIM card.

Below we compare three eSIM providers that work well in Morocco, look at coverage around the country and suggest how much data to buy.

Quick answer: the best eSIM for Morocco

ProviderBest forWhy we like it
AiraloMost travellersBig brand, simple app, Morocco and regional plans, easy top-ups
YesimLonger trips and heavy usersFlexible plans including pay-as-you-go and unlimited-style options
SailySecurity-minded travellersBuilt by the team behind NordVPN, with extra privacy features in the app

Prices change often and all three run regular promotions, so compare the current Morocco plans on each site before you buy. For a typical one-week holiday, a mid-size plan is usually enough.

Mobile networks in Morocco

Morocco has three mobile operators: Maroc Telecom (also called IAM), Orange and inwi. Travel eSIMs connect to one or more of them. Coverage is strong in cities and along the main roads, including Marrakech, Casablanca, Rabat, Fes, Tangier, Agadir and Essaouira.

Signal gets weaker in the High Atlas valleys and in the Sahara. If you are doing a desert tour to Merzouga or Zagora, expect patches with little or no data, and download offline maps before you leave the city.

eSIM vs local SIM card in Morocco

Local SIM cards are cheap in Morocco, and operators often have stands in the arrivals hall. An eSIM still has a few advantages:

  • You are online as soon as you land, before the passport queue and before you need a taxi.
  • Your own number stays active for calls, texts and bank verification codes.
  • You skip the phone shop and the paperwork, which helps if you don’t speak French or Arabic.
  • You can top up in the app instead of hunting for a recharge card.

A local SIM can still be the cheapest choice if you are staying for a month or more and need lots of data. For a one or two week holiday, we think the time an eSIM saves is worth the small extra cost.

Which eSIM should you choose?

Airalo: the easy all-rounder

Airalo is the best-known travel eSIM brand. It offers plans for Morocco plus regional and global plans, which are handy if you are combining Morocco with Spain or Portugal. The app shows your remaining data clearly and topping up takes seconds.

Yesim: flexible and good for longer stays

Yesim is a strong option if you are not sure how much data you need. Its range includes fixed plans, pay-as-you-go and unlimited-style options, so you can pick what suits a two-week road trip or a month of remote work in Marrakech.

Saily: extra privacy features

Saily comes from Nord Security, the company behind NordVPN. On top of standard data plans, its app adds security features that are useful when you rely on public Wi-Fi in cafés and riads.

How to install and activate your eSIM

  • Check your phone first. Your phone must support eSIM and be carrier-unlocked. On iPhone go to Settings → General → About and look for “Digital SIM”; on Android search Settings for “eSIM”.
  • Install before you fly, on hotel or home Wi-Fi. Scanning the QR code needs an internet connection, and most plans only start counting days when they first connect to a local network.
  • Keep your home SIM on for calls and texts (useful for bank codes), but turn off data roaming on it so you are not charged by your home operator.
  • Set the eSIM as your mobile data line and switch on data roaming for the eSIM only. Travel eSIMs connect as a roaming partner, so this is expected.
  • Delete nothing until you are home. If you remove an eSIM profile you usually cannot reinstall it.

How much data do you need?

Trip styleTypical useSuggested plan
LightMaps, WhatsApp, booking emails1 GB per 3–4 days
NormalPlus Instagram, ride apps, some video callsAbout 1 GB per day, or a 10–20 GB plan
Heavy / remote workHotspot for a laptop, video, uploadsUnlimited, or 20 GB+ with top-ups

Tip: switch off automatic app updates and photo backups over mobile data. They are the most common reason travellers run out of data on day two.

Planning your Morocco trip

Once your data is sorted, read our guides to the best time to book flights to Morocco, low-cost airlines flying to Morocco and our Marrakech travel guide.

FAQ

Do eSIMs work in Morocco?

Yes. Travel eSIMs from Airalo, Yesim and Saily work on Moroccan networks. You just need an eSIM-compatible, unlocked phone.

Can I use WhatsApp in Morocco?

Yes, WhatsApp messages work normally over mobile data. Many riads, guides and drivers prefer to be contacted on WhatsApp.

Does the eSIM give me a Moroccan phone number?

Most travel eSIMs are data-only. Use WhatsApp or similar apps for calls, and keep your home SIM active for SMS codes.

Cheap Flights to Essaouira: Fly Direct or via Marrakech?

Blue fishing boats in the port of Essaouira

Imagine spending your morning wandering through narrow streets lined with whitewashed houses and bright blue doors, watching fishing boats return to the harbour, and enjoying the smell of fresh seafood coming from small local restaurants. That’s Essaouira, one of Morocco’s most charming coastal towns. With its relaxed atmosphere, ocean views, and historic medina, it’s the kind of place where you can slow down, forget about busy city life, and enjoy a different side of Morocco.

But before you can enjoy all of this, there’s one important thing to figure out: how do you get to Essaouira without spending more than necessary?

Essaouira has its own small airport, which can be a convenient option if you find a suitable flight. However, flights to Essaouira are not always the cheapest or most practical choice, depending on where you’re travelling from and your dates. That’s why many travellers choose to fly into Marrakech or Agadir instead and complete the journey by road.

Both cities offer a different way to reach the coast. Marrakech is a popular entry point for international visitors, with a wider range of flights and plenty of transport options. Agadir, on the other hand, can be a good alternative if you’re already exploring southern Morocco or find a better flight deal. From either city, you can continue to Essaouira by bus, shared taxi, private transfer, or rental car, depending on your budget and travel style.

Of course, the cheapest option isn’t always the most convenient. You’ll also want to consider travel time, transport costs, flight schedules, and how much effort you’re willing to put into getting there.

So, should you fly to Marrakech or Agadir before heading to Essaouira? In this guide, we’ll compare both routes, look at the main transport options, and help you decide which one makes the most sense for your trip. That way, you can spend less time worrying about logistics and more time looking forward to the Atlantic breeze, fresh fish, and laid-back charm of Essaouira.

Cheap Flights to Essaouira

Essaouira is a relaxed, windswept port town on Morocco’s Atlantic coast, with a UNESCO-listed medina, blue fishing boats and great seafood. It has its own small airport, but often the cheapest way to get there is to fly into Marrakech or Agadir and continue by road. Compare both options below.

Comfortable coaches run by Supratours and CTM connect Marrakech and Agadir with Essaouira several times a day. A private transfer is faster and lets you stop at argan cooperatives on the way.

To compare fares to Marrakech instead, see our guides from London and Paris.

When to go

  • April to June and September to October: pleasant temperatures and good value.
  • July and August: busy, but Essaouira stays cooler than inland Morocco thanks to the sea breeze. It is a favourite escape from the Marrakech heat.
  • June: the Gnaoua World Music Festival brings big crowds, so book flights and rooms early.

Essaouira is known as one of the windiest places in Morocco, ideal for kitesurfing and windsurfing, so bring a light jacket even in summer.

Money-saving tips

  • Compare flights to Marrakech and Agadir as well as Essaouira.
  • Book the coach in advance in busy periods.
  • Eat at the fish market grills near the port for fresh, affordable seafood.

Agadir is Morocco’s beach capital, with a long sandy bay, mild winters and plenty of direct flights from London. At around four hours, it is one of the most reliable winter-sun trips you can take without a long-haul flight. Compare live prices below.

London to Agadir at a glance

DetailWhat to expect
Flight timeAbout 3 h 45 min to 4 h 10 min direct

Arrival airportAgadir Al Massira (AGA), about 25 km from the beach
Airlines you will often seeeasyJet, Ryanair, Jet2, TUI

Some routes run only in winter or summer. Check the current schedule in the search results.

Which London airport is best for Agadir?

It depends on the day. Gatwick usually has the most choice, with both low-cost and holiday airlines, while Stansted and Luton can be cheaper on some dates. Searching with the LON code compares them all at once, so you only need to factor in the cost of getting to the airport.

When is Agadir cheapest?

  • Best value: January after New Year, late November and early December, and May.
  • Peak prices: Christmas, New Year, February and October half-terms, Easter and the summer holidays.

Agadir is warmer than most of Europe in winter, with daytime highs often around 20 degrees, which is why fares from the UK rise in school holidays. Travelling just before or after a half-term week can save a lot.

Tips to pay less

  • Compare flight only and package. In peak weeks a package with hotel and transfer can be cheaper. Outside holidays, flight only plus your own hotel usually wins.
  • Check every day of the week. Some airlines fly only a few days a week, so prices vary a lot between days.
  • Pack light if you are flying with a low-cost airline.
  • Book early for half-term, ideally three to six months ahead.

If there is no direct flight from your city, compare a one-stop ticket via Casablanca with Royal Air Maroc, or fly to Tangier, Rabat or Casablanca and take the train.

Fly to another city and take the train

Morocco’s trains are a good option. Fes has direct trains to Casablanca, Rabat, Meknes, Tangier and Marrakech. Flying into a city with more flights and continuing by train can sometimes be cheaper overall.
